Pieris japonica ‘Shojo’
Pieris japonica, in its native Japanese and Chinese habitat, grows up 2.5 metres tall. ‘Shojo’ is a smaller growing selection making a compact, mounded evergreen shrub. Its new spring foliage is soft red maturing to glossy dark green. Clusters of deep pink lily-of-the-valley flowers emerge from dark red almost black buds in early spring. Best grown in moist, well drained soil in light to medium shade. It prefers slightly acid soils and will not grow well in alkaline areas. Height 120-150cm with a spread of 100-150cm.
