Cytisus x beanii
This attractive little shrub was named for a past director of the Kew Botanic Gardens and the author of Bean’s Trees and Shrubs Hardy in the British Isles. Small enough to grow in the rock garden and showy enough to be given pride of place in our dry climate garden, where every spring “…its semi prostrate mass of rounded twigs are strung for their length by pairs of flowers of dark yellow”. G.S. Thomas Ornamental Shrubs, Climbers and Bamboos. Long-lived and wanting nothing more than a well-drained spot in full sun. Whilst Lambley used to grow this in the Dandenongs we lost it in our move to Ascot. Ken Gillanders very kindly sent cuttings to us 15 years ago and this lovely little shrub has thrived in the same spot in the Lambley garden ever since where it has grown some 40cm tall by 70cm across.
