Zauschneria cana ‘Catalina’
During spring the Ruby Throated Hummingbird migrates from its Mexican winter headquarters through California and other US western states to Canada to breed. During this spring migration there are lots of flowers to sustain them. On the way back less so. The late flowering Zauschnerias are amongst the most important food sources on the Hummingbird’s trip back to their winter homes. Z. ‘Catalina’ was collected on Catalina Island off the coast of Southern California. It is the last of the species to flower flowering late to coincide with the arrival of the Hummingbirds from their Canadian sojourn. In the Zauschneria trials at the Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Gardens (the leading botanic garden specialising in Californian plants) it was one of the best of 30 cultivars grown. Spectacular orange-red trumpets are complimented by its silver leaves. It makes a sub-shrub some 30cm tall by 80cm across.
