This hybrid between Lonicera sempervirens and L. x americana was raised before the end of the 19th century. Terminal heads of purple to deep pink buds open to golden yellow sweetly fragrant flowers. The blooms are most profuse during summer but some flowers can be expected during spring and autumn too. Vigorous in growth it will soon cover a trellis, arbour or fence. If pruned it can be made into a charming rounded shrub. Semi- evergreen with us if allowed to climb it can grow between 3-4 metres tall. The late Dame Elisabeth Murdoch trained it on a standard in her picking garden. It looked stunning. ‘Gold Flame’ will grow best in a sunny or lightly shaded spot which gets some extra summer irrigation.
