Whilst Iris ensata is native to northern China, Korea, eastern Russia as well as Japan, it is Japanese gardeners who first started the long process of turning a fairly modest but beautiful Iris wildling into the extravagant, flamboyant fantasies that these Iris are today. The flowers of ‘Tiramasu’ which are at least 15cm wide, are white with a frilled purple edge and flecked with purple striations and freckles. The spectacular flowers are carried on strong 1-metre-tall stems. When picked just as the flower begins to unfurl, Japanese Iris make terrific cut flowers. Best grown in soil which is kept moist. this Iris is happy grown in sun or light shade and even will grow in wet areas near water.
