A striking plant both in foliage and flower Ferula tingitana makes 1.5 metres wide mounds of much dissected yew green foliage. After a couple of years it produces a thick two metre spear which opens to huge rounded acid yellow flower heads. It is happy in any sunny spot and is drought tolerant when once established. Summer dormant. A clone of this plant is thought to have been the source of Silphium a very precious and expensive aphrodisiac, acting rather like Viagra, perfume and medicine in classical Roman times.
