A magnificent selection from the renowned New Millennium series, Delphinium ‘Pagan Purples’ produces tall, stately spires of sumptuous semi-double flowers in rich shades of deep purple and blue, each highlighted by a white or brown central bee. Bred in New Zealand by Terry and Janice Dowdeswell, it combines exceptional flower quality with improved vigour, strong stems and greater resilience to heat and humidity than many traditional delphiniums.
Their towering flower spikes reach up to 1.5 metres or more and are amongst the true glories of the horticultural world, bringing drama and elegance to the perennial border while also making superb cut flowers.
Flowering from November through to the end of April, they reward good cultivation with an exceptionally long season of colour. Remove spent flower spikes as they fade to encourage repeat flowering. At Lambley, we cut our plants back to the ground after the first magnificent flush in early January and, within just a few weeks, they produce another impressive display of velvety purple-blue flower spikes.
Grow in full sun or light afternoon shade in fertile, well-drained soil with regular summer irrigation. Given good garden conditions, this outstanding perennial will provide years of spectacular displays.
