Cantua buxifolia
When in flower this evergreen shrub, one of the few shrubs in the Polimoniaceae which includes Phlox, is one of the joys of the garden. During spring many flowered clusters of 7.5cm long, red flared, deep pink, tubular flowers, make an astonishing display. Growing to a height of 1.8-2 metres and up to 1,8 metres wide it is easily satisfied in the garden in a spot in sun or light shade which is kept moist during dry periods. Cantua buxifolia is the national flower of Peru where it grows on relatively moist slopes of the Andes mountains. It also grows in similar of Bolivia. The RHS gave their highest accolade, an Award of Garden Merit to this shrub.
