This native of shady places is most abundant in Europe but outliers can be found throughout the northern hemisphere. It makes evergreen clumps, up to 60cm tall by as much wide, of arching, tongue shaped, glossy green fronds. Its common name comes from its likeness to a male red deer’s tongue – an antlered stag was in times past called a hart. Best grown in a moist, shaded spot where it will need very little care besides a good soak now and then. The Royal Horticultural Society gave this fern the prestigious Award of Garden Merit (AGM). This award is only given to outstanding garden plants.
