Alonsoa meridionalis ‘Shell Pink’
This charming form of the species will produce its exquisite shell-pink, peach-tinted flowers for much of the warmer months from mid-spring until quite late in the autumn. Growing up to 30-40cm tall by as much across it is happiest in a sunny spot in the garden which receives regular waterings during dry periods. The species can be found growing wild from Mexico through central America to Bolivia. It the reappears further south in Chile. David Glenn says “I first saw this Alonsoa growing in the Pirianda Gardens rockery 50 years ago when this marvelous garden was still owned by its founders, Mr and Mrs Harvey Ansell. On their death the Ansells generously gifted the gardens to the people of Victoria. Set on 20 acres of hill country near Olinda in the Dandenong Ranges the gardens which are open to the public are seriously well worth a visit. It is renowned for its collection of wonderful trees many of which the Ansells imported from Hilliers the famous English nursery.
