Clematis ‘Fairy Queen’
This clematis has withstood the ravages of time and, unlike we mortal souls, is as beautiful today as it was in its youth 160 years ago. Amongst the largest-flowered of all its kin, the blooms can, in ideal conditions, be as large as 25cm across although 20cm would be more typical. Although not so large the flowers droop under their own weight. On opening the sepals are pale pink with a narrow deeper bar. The entire bloom soon fades and the bar “… becomes a faint tracery of pink in a mainly white flower”. Whilst it happily grows in full sun the flowers of ‘Fairy Queen’ are more beautiful if shaded from the most intense sunlight. Height up to 3 metres width 0.5-1 metre.
