Bergenia ciliata
Lambley imported this, to my mind the most desirable of all Bergenias, from the now defunct UK nursery, Hannays of Bath. Bergenia ciliata has round hairy leaves about 25 to35cm in diameter, a bit like a giant African Violet in effect. Sprays of large flowers, white aging to pink are held well above the foliage during early spring. In our garden it is herbaceous but will be evergreen in warmer climes. This plant is rarely offered in Australia as it is so slow to propagate and so breathtakingly beautiful, that any examples offered are quickly snapped up. Bergenia ciliata makes an extraordinarily beautiful pot plant; we grow it in a large terracotta pot.
