Salvia pachyphylla
This fascinating denizen of rocky Californian mountainsides is one of the most distinct (distinguished) of all the Salvias. This evergreen shrub, some 60cm tall by as much wide, is clothed with intensely aromatic silver leaves. For many summer months the Mojave Sage carries stems of densely whorled, smokey purple-mauve bracts. The bracts enclose delicate violet-blue flowers. To do well this sage needs a sunny spot in the garden with very sharp drainage.
