This intergeneric hybrid between Catalpa bignonoides and Chilopsis linearis was raised in the Tashkent botanical gardens in Uzbekistan. It is a superb summer flowering small tree or large shrub for both hot dry inland conditions and coastal areas. It freely produces showy heads of large, pink, tubular flowers for a good three months. Best grown in sun or light shade Chitalpa is drought tolerant when once established. In our own garden it has made a small tree some 4 metres tall by as much across in ten years or so.
