Verbena officinalis ‘Bampton’

Common Vervain Bampton

Verbena officinalis has a very wide distribution from Europe to Australia where several different subspecies grow. In Latin its specific name ‘officinalis’ means “used in medicine or herbalism.” Verbena officinalis was also known in medieval times as the Holy Herb because it was thought to have staunched Jesus’ blood when he was taken from the cross. ‘Bampton’ is a fine selection of the species as it has glossy purple foliage rather than the typical green. The flowers spikes carried on 60-80cm tall wiry stems are a more lovely deeper shade of amethyst pink than the normal pale purple flowers of the species.  Verbena ‘Bampton’ is best grown in full sun where it will grow 60-80cm tall and 40-50cm wide.
