Sprekelia formosissima

The species name formosissima means ‘most beautiful’. The bulbous Jacobean Lily displays its 15cm extraordinarily beautiful glossy red flowers on 30 cm tall stems from quite early in the spring until early summer with an occasional bloom beyond. Easily grown in any well drained position in both sun and light shade it will make good sized clumps in a relatively short time.
“The common name Aztec Lily refers to the native range of this species and its overlap with the historic extent of the Aztec empire.” The flower also resembles the Cross of St James and as this bulb was introduced to England during the reign of James 1, in what came to be known as the Jacobean era, it is also known as the Jacobean lily.
Criss Canning has painted this flower several times.
