Salix acutifolia ‘Blue Streak’ (Not for Tasmania)
Blue Streak’ willow has beautiful, ghostly blue-grey young branches which are particularly attractive in winter when bare. Silver catkins are a bonus in late winter and early spring. We cut most of the growths down to 30cm each spring as this will give the longest and most arching stems. I leave a few unpruned as these flower best. ‘Blue Streak’, a male clone which won’t cause any weed problems, has the Royal Horticultural Society’s coveted Award of Garden Merit. If pruned hard each year will grow 2 metres tall by as much across. It needs very little extra irrigation.
