Rheum rhabarbarum ‘Wakefield’

This is another old variety from west Yorkshire where rhubarb is still grown in great quantities. ‘Wakefield’ has glossy dark red skin and a greenish white interior. When cooked the fruit becomes rich red. ‘Wakefield’ is a 19th century clone and somewhat more vigorous than ‘Ruby Red’. The name is derived from the cathedral city of Wakefield in Yorkshire, England.
