Whilst this species does grow in Siberia it can be found from Central Europe through Siberia to Mongolia, North Korea and northwestern China. In the wild it grows in a variety of habitats from rock crevices to slopes to woodlands from low to mid altitude. Not difficult to cultivate if grown in rich moist soil in a lightly shaded spot. It produces its magenta pink flower heads on 30cm tall stems during spring.
