Deep egg yolk yellow talon-like flowers open, from russet-olive buds, in whorls along vertical flower stems during spring and into early summer. P. longifolia, a native the dry hillsides of Turkey and Lebanon, makes a tidy evergreen shrub which in our garden has grown a metre tall by a metre across. P. longifolia is happy in any sunny well-drained spot, drought when once established, and is a favourite of ours.
