Philadelphus maculatus ‘Sweet Clare’
To our mind the most beautiful and the most highly scented of all the Philadelphus, ‘Sweet Clare’ will make a height of 1.5-2 metres with a spread of 2 metres after 5-8 years. A vigorous deciduous shrub with arching branches clothed in slender, silver-backed green leaves and, from early summer, carrying pendent, highly scented white flowers with a crimson blotch at the base of each petal. Plant this deciduous shrub near an entrance or pathway, so you can get a whiff of the perfumed blooms each time you pass. It makes a fine specimen feature plant for the shrub border, the edge of a lightly shaded woodland, or allow the weeping branches to spill over a wall.
