Penstemon ‘Sour Grapes’ is one of the best-known and most enduring Penstemon, with a long history in English gardens. It was grown for many years by Vita Sackville-West at Sissinghurst, a fitting endorsement for a plant that combines elegance with toughness. Its upright stems carry dense clusters of narrow, tubular flowers in beautiful shades of soft green, amethyst, purple and blue, with a pale, finely marked throat that adds to the intricate colouring.

Growing to around 60–70cm high and 60cm wide, ‘Sour Grapes’ forms a neat, upright perennial that is well suited to the mixed border. It is remarkably hardy and dependable, tolerating both summer heat and winter frosts once established. For the best display, grow it in full sun and cut back hard in winter or early spring, down to a low woody framework of about 30cm from the ground. This helps rejuvenate the plant, encourages fresh vigorous growth and prevents it from becoming overly woody.
