The creamy white cup shaped flowers of this Magnolia are splashed with a hint of maroon, giving it one of it’s common names, ‘Port Wine Magnolia’. The flowers make for a visually beautiful shrub or small tree… but the scent of these flowers is almost as beautiful as they look, having the fragrance of beautiful cantaloupe. A native of China, where so many elegant garden shrubs originate, it will make a largish evergreen shrub some 3 metres tall by 2 metres across. Foliage is dark glossy green when well fed. Whilst best grown in dappled shade, it will grow quite happily in full sun as long as it is watered during dry periods.
