Garrrya elliptica, a native of dry coastal areas of California and southern Oregon, is one of the most telling of all evergreen winter flowering shrubs. It is renowned for its long male greyish green catkins. ‘James Roof’, a Royal Horticultural Society Award of Garden Merit recipient, is a selection with the longest and showiest catkins. In the Lambley garden it has made some 2.5 metres tall by as much wide in ten years. The leathery dark green leaves make a perfect foil for the flowers. Drought tolerant when once established it possibly looks better for some extra watering during dry periods.
