This new hybrid fennel is a better proposition than open pollinated varieties as it resists running up to seed. Sow seeds during January and February for a crop of large bulbs from May until August. Direct sow into drills in rows 45cm apart and thin the seedlings to 15cm apart.
When to sow: January and February
Where to sow: Direct sow
Depth to sow: 1/2cm
Aspect: Full sun or as sunny a spot as possible.
Soil: Prepared, well drained, fertilised soil. Add lime if soil is too acid.
Spacing: Between plants 15cm Between rows 45cm
Directions: During January and February sow two or three seeds 1/2cm deep every 15cm in rows which are 45cm apart. After germination thin to one seedling taking care not to disturb the seedling which is left. Any disturbance can cause the fennel to run up to seed prematurely. Keep the beds well-watered and clean of weeds.
