One of the most handsome of handsome herbaceous perennials, ‘Gateway’ will grow into metre wide clumps which generate 150cm tall, reddish stems clothed in 15cm long, lance shaped leaves and crowned with wide heads of purple budded, soft mauve-purple flowers. It will need a sunny spot that is not allowed to parch during dry weather. Late to come into growth, not before mid-October here, it shoots up so quickly you can almost hear it grow. By Christmas it is two metres tall. The large cauliflower purple heads are produced in late summer and autumn. Sun and some summer irrigation. 200cm x 80cm.
