This rarely offered Californian buckwheat, which grows wild on Catalina Island off the coast of Southern California, creates a great deal of interest amongst visitors to the garden. It makes a beautiful grey-leaved shrub, 150cm tall by as much across which, during summer, carries large domed heads of small white flowers. These flowers age to mahogany as the season progresses and finally in winter drop off leaving a an intricate mahogany skeleton. This drought tolerant plant is happy in any well drained sunny spot.
