This choice ground cover for a shaded spot has long pinnate leaves with spiny edged, heart shaped leaflets. The leaves are bronze during spring making a charming contrast with the spider-like flowers for many spring and summer months. Sepals are soft crimson and the petals pale yellow. The divided evergreen foliage is handsome for most of the year but is best cut to the ground during mid-winter as the spring flowers and new foliage make a lovely combination. Epimediums are woodland plants and most need a moisture retentive soil in a light to medium shaded spot. E. rhizomatosum grows wild in the mountains of Sichuan in south western China.
