Clematis viticella ‘Venosa Violacea’
The C. viticella hybrids are amongst the toughest, most vigorous and easy-going plants in the genus. They are also long lived. We have flourishing vines which were planted decades ago. C. ‘Venosa Violacea’, introduced by the famous French nursery Lemoine et Fils in 1883, gained the prestigious RHS Award of Garden Merit many years ago. The RHS describe it thus “Single open flowers up to 10cm in width, with 5-6 sepals, are white, deeply edged and veined deep purple with dark purple and white stamens.” We cut all the Viticella group back to 30cm during winter and again in early January when the first flush of flowers is over. We then get an extra display from late February through to April. All told this group is in flower for 20 weeks each year. Height 2.5 metre width 1-1.5 metres.
