This deciduous Chinese tree has both beautiful flowers and large, handsome, heart-shaped foliage. Introduced to the West by Ernest Wilson in 1907, in cultivation it can grow 8 metres tall by 4 metres wide in ten years although the plant can be kept smaller by cutting it back hard during winter. This cutting back promotes larger and even more handsome foliage. The large and glorious flowers are “..lilac-pink with red-brown spots stained with yellow.” The flowers are followed by 80cm long seed pods. Best grown in a position sheltered from strong winds the tree needs some supplementary irrigation during dry periods. The Chinese Bean tree has been granted the prestigious Award of Garden Merit by the Royal Horticultural Society.
