I first saw this glorious shrub four decades ago in the Cambridge University Botanic Gardens on a beautiful sunny June day. Swathes of elegantly arching branches were enveloped from top to toe with fragrant lilac-purple flowers. This ancient specimen was huge and given pride of place in the centre of a lush lawn. The next time I saw this was in the late Elisabeth Murdoch’s walled garden where it was beautifully grown as a small weeping standard. Whilst this Buddleja can get very large it is easily kept in line with a good cut back after flowering to a manageable 2 metres tall by 2 metres width. It is endemic to the Chinese province of Gansu which has very hot summers and very cold winters and rarely if ever needing supplementary irrigation
