Bergenia purpurascens

Purple Bergenia

This RHS Award of Garden Merit clump-forming perennial is native to the Himalayas from Nepal to southern China via Assam, Tibet and Myanmar. Much more desirable than the common variety found in so many old Australian gardens it produces deep pink bells dangling on 40cm tall stems and is worth growing for its flowers alone. As its specific name implies the glossy dark green leaves turn reddish purple in winter. Happy in any shaded or well-watered sunny spot and it also makes a terrific long lived pot plant. The foliage mounds will grow some 30cm tall with a spread of 50cm and when once established will make a terrific weed suppressing ground cover.
