Called Hattie’s Pincushion as the flowers “look like a mass of pins stuck into a central cushion. Surrounding the cushion is a ring of pointed papery bracts.” Dark red flowers are held on almost black stems well above dense clumps of palmate leaves. First blooming during late spring and early summer it will, if cut back hard after the first flush is finished, produce a second blooming during late summer and early autumn. Astrantias are best grown in fertile soil in a lightly shaded spot which isn’t allowed to parch during dry weather. Height 80cm width 40cm.
