This is the Aster x frikartii that the late Dennis Norgate sold for so many years and it is one of the best, if not the best, of all Easter daisies. Difficult to propagate but easy to grow, it produces large, well-shaped, cool lavender-blue flowers from January until April. Whilst it is best grown in full sun, it is quite happy in dappled shade. 60cm x 90cm. Unlike other Asters, this doesn’t suffer from powdery mildew, nor does it run at the feet. Rabbits leave it alone too, at least they do in the Lambley Garden. This superb Aster, one of the best of all perennial garden plants, was raised in Switzerland in the 1920s. In G.S. Thomas’s book Perennial Garden Plants he states that this is one of the ten best perennials and he didn’t know the other nine.
