Bright orange, flat topped flower heads, 10cm or more across, are carried on 45cm tall leafy stems for much of the summer. The flowers are followed by attractive green seed pods. The Butterfly Milkweed attracts many species of butterfly as well as native and honey bees. 45cm tall by 30cm wide. Best grown in full sun this species is fairly drought tolerant when once established.
Every year the Eastern Monarch Butterflies migrate up to 5,000 kilometres from their overwintering habitat in Mexico to breeding grounds in the USA and Canada. The Monarchs attach their eggs to the underside of the leaves of milkweed and these leaves are the caterpillar’s sole food. We have Monarch butterflies in Australia too who will appreciate this plant in your garden.
