Armeria alliacea x maritima ‘Bees Ruby’

Armeria ‘Bees Ruby’ has stood the test of time and is one of the most beautiful, most showy of all the thrifts. Making 30cm wide evergreen clumps on narrow, glossy dark green leaves it produces ball like heads of bright, deep pink flowers on 30cm tall stems for many spring and summer months. Best grown in full sun this plant will need some extra watering during dry times.
Armeria alliacea x maritima ‘Bees Ruby’ wasn’t named because of its attraction to bees, although it is that, rather it is named for the famous Bees Nursery of Chester.  Bees set up business near the ancient town of Chester, situated in the west of England near the border with Wales, in 1903 and it was a going family concern until 1983 when the business was sold. In its early days the nursery was famous for introducing many newly discovered plants from China and the Himalayas.
In the wild Armeria arenaria is native to Austria, France, Italy, Spain and Switzerland. However, it has long been cultivated in gardens.
