Schizophragma hydrangeoides
Syn. Hydrangea hydrangeoides
Climbing Hydrangea
S. hydrangeoides is a deciduous climber native to Japan, Korea and the southern Kuril Islands. Best grown in a sheltered spot in dappled shade or an easterly aspect where it can cling to a wall or a tree trunk. In the wild it can grow 10 metres tall but in cultivation it can be easily kept to 3 metres. The leaves are handsome, glossy deep green above and paler below. The Climbing Hydrangea produces its scented lace cap flowers during mid-summer.
