Hakonechloa macra
Green Japanese Temple Grass
This beautiful grass can be seen lining the pathway to the Mt Fuji Shrine at the base of Mt Fuji where it grows under Japanese cedars (Cryptomeria japonica). Whilst variegated and golden leafed forms have been offered before in Australia the dark green leafed species form is rarely offered and hard to come by. Best grown in light to medium shade Hakonechloa macra will make gracefully arching mounds of dark green leaves held on wiry stems which are so flexible that they rustle whenever the wind blows. The feathery flowers are charming during summer and autumn. Height 30-40cm width 50cm.
