The spring-flowering Tamarix parviflora, native to southeastern Europe and Türkiye, is the plant most likely to be seen growing in Victoria where it has been widely planted on farms. A good example can be seen 20 kilometres to the north of Lambley where a group of half a dozen flourish near a large dam where, on sunny spring days, the clear pink flowers held on thin arching branches are reflected in the water, making a heart-stopping scene. As this Tamarix flowers on last season’s wood it should only be pruned or cut back after flowering. It can be coppiced when it will grow 200cm tall by as much across. Grown as a tree it will make twice that. It will grow happily in very alkaline soils as well as normal garden soils and whilst it will take wet feet is drought tolerant when once established.
