The flowers with shades of grey, purple, navy on a white base with intricate deep purple centres make excellent cut flowers as well as being a good garden subject. The unusual seed pods are useful both fresh and dried. Direct sow from mid-autumn until late spring.

Where to sow: Sow direct in the garden
Depth to sow: 1/2cm
Aspect: Full sun or as sunny a spot as possible.
Soil: Prepared, well drained, fertilised soil. Add lime if soil is too acid.
Spacing: Between plants: 25cm
Directions: Sow seed 1/2 cm deep or just sprinkle the seed straight into the garden at three weekly intervals, from July until October. Height 90cm spacing 25cm.
