Lambley Nursery Meadow Mix is our most beautiful mixture of Flanders Poppy (Papaver rhoeas), Love-in-the-Mist (Nigella damascena), Queen Anne’s Lace (Ammi majus) and Cornflower (Centaurea cyanus). Each packet contains enough seed to sow 10 square metres. Keep the surface of the mulch moist at all times until germination takes place.
When my eldest son Ric Glenn was head gardener on the Cadogan Estate in London I visited him at one of his gardens, Cadogan Place Garden, which was open to the public under the Squares of London Scheme. The estate owns 100 acres of Chelsea and Knightsbridge including 16 acres of mostly private gardens.
One small part of the garden got more attention and more admiring gasps than any other area. This was a meadow garden which Ric had sown with the help of local school children.
When asked about weed control in his meadow garden Ric said that no weeds had germinated because he had covered this patch of garden with a weed free mulch. (Composted horse manure from Buckingham Palace).
Ric is now head gardener managing areas of Crown Land around the Regent’s Park and Carlton House Terrace in London.
When I got back to Australia I sowed a small area myself and was delighted with the result.
As this Meadow Mix contains poppies it is best planted before mid-August.

This is how we did it:
Dig the garden bed.
Rake it level.
Lay a 5cm deep mulch of composted pine bark over the bed.
Mix the seed with fine dry sand as poppy seed is very light and will not spread well.
Sow a meadow seed mix onto the surface of the mulch. Don’t cover the seed at all as poppies will not germinate if not exposed to light.
Keep the surface of the mulch moist at all times until germination takes place.
Stand back and wait for a brilliant late spring early summer display.
