Sicilian Squill

Closely related to S. peruviana the Sicilian Squill can be found growing wild in a few patches on the islands of Malta and Sicily. Ther is a small population in Calabria as well.  It is endangered in all localities. It is however easily grown in gardens. Bulbs produce rosettes of dark green leaves edged with tiny hairs. During spring a stout stem is topped with a conical head of buds. The flowers are pale bluish grey with pronounced blue stamens. Height up to 30cm width 40cm. Happy in any well drained spot in sun or shade. Pot grown.
