Almerian Phlomis

The Almerian Phlomis is found in the most arid parts of of the south-eastern corner of Spain and adjacent parts of Portugal. This sub-species is one of the most beautiful pink-flowered plants in the genus. It makes an evergreen shrub some 120cm tall by 100cm wide. Its leaves are intensely grey-white and clothe the stems from top to bottom. Clear pink flowers are carried in whorls for many months during spring and early summer. Needs a very well drained, sunny spot in the garden and is drought tolerant when once established. Olivier Filippi, the famed author of 'Planting Design for Dry Gardens', gives this plant the highest of ratings for drought tolerance.
