Herbs, Coriander ‘Santo’ (Coriandrum sativum)

Herbs, Coriander ‘Santo’ (Coriandrum sativum)

As I grow coriander for its leaves rather than for its seeds I grow this new relatively slow bolting variety. This is a new improved replacement for Calypso. It is ready to pick in less than a month and a half and will under reasonable conditions take three or four months before it runs up to seed. It’s best to sow seed at six weekly intervals.

When to sow: Mid spring to late summer

Where to sow: Direct Depth to sow: 5mm

Aspect: Full sun or as sunny a spot as possible.

Soil: Prepared, well drained, fertilised soil. Add lime if soil is too acid.

Spacing: Between plants: 5cm to 10cm Between rows: 40cm

Directions: It’s best to sow coriander seed at six weekly intervals in 1cm deep drills straight into the garden. Thin to 5cm to 10cm apart. Raising it in seed trays and transplanting could well trigger premature bolting so is not advised.
