We grew these perennial New Zealand bred Delphiniums in our garden last year and visitors were besotted by their beauty. Their immense spires grow up to 180cm or more tall and are amongst the glories of the horticultural world. They will flower from November until the end of April. We will include full cultural notes with each order. We cut these to the ground when the first flush of flowers is over in early January and within a few weeks we are rewarded by more columns of sky-blue flowers on strong 120-140cm tall stems. It needs good garden conditions in full sun with some summer irrigation. 150cm x 90cm. Pot grown plants. Strong 120-140 tall stems.

 

These good strong well-grown plants will be supplied in their winter dormancy with vigorous new shoots ready to emerge

Growing Delphiniums Well

1 Plant in deep well drained soil in a sunny spot.

2 Add a hand full of garden lime per square metre if soil is very acid.

3 Make sure the pot is well watered before planting. Don’t plant if the root ball is dry.

4 Tease the roots out a little. It takes a full year to grow a good sized Delphinium in the nursery so roots will be congested.

5  Plant a little deeper than the soil level in the pot.

6 Immediately after planting protect from slugs and snails by
  a) Placing snail bait around the plant.
  b) Circling the plant with cold wood ash.
  c) Dusting the area around the plant with garden lime. This will dry out the skin of the snails and slugs.

7 The flower stems of these grand Delphiniums need staking.

8  Remove spent flower stems to encourage another flowering.
