Zinnia ‘Cherry Queen’ (Zinnia elegans)

Zinnia ‘Cherry Queen’ (Zinnia elegans)

Fabulous cherry-red large flowered zinnia.

Zinnias were grown in every grandmother’s garden but in latter years have all but vanished from the scene. One reason is that if Zinnias are bought as seedlings success is unlikely. Zinnias must be direct seeded into the garden. Zinnias start to flower in January and produce until well into April. They are especially good as a cut flower as well as being bright cheerful garden subjects.

When to sow: November-December
Where to sow: Direct in a prepared garden bed when the weather warms up.
Depth to sow: 1/2cm
Aspect:  Full sun or as sunny a spot as possible.
Soil:  Prepared, well drained, fertilised soil. Add lime if soil is too acid.
Spacing: Between plants: 40-50cm

Directions:  Zinnias must be direct seeded into the garden. Plant 3 seeds per station when the weather warms up (mid-November here at Lambley) in well-drained soil in a sunny spot. Thin to the strongest seedling when the first true leaves appear. Zinnias start to flower in January and produce well into April. They are especially good as a cut flower as well as being bright and cheerful garden subjects.
