Cabbage, Savoy ‘Alcosa’ F1 (Brassica oleracea)

Cabbage, Savoy ‘Alcosa’ F1 (Brassica oleracea)

A terrific savoy cabbage which can be planted from early spring until mid-autumn. Size will depend on how closely seedlings are planted. I plant this variety closely 25cm by 25cm to give a cabbage which will feed half a dozen people. Alcosa has yellow interior leaves and a beautiful, sweet, tender flavour.

When to sow: December, January and early February.

Where to sow: Seed tray, pots or in a garden seed bed

Depth to sow: 1/2cm Aspect: Full sun or as sunny a spot as possible.

Soil: Prepared, well drained, fertilised soil. Add lime if soil is too acid.

Spacing: Between plants 40cm Between rows 60cm

Directions: If grown under cover when the first two true leaves appear harden the seedlings off by taking them outside on a cool cloudy day. Keep watered. When the seedlings are 6-8cm tall plant in the garden. First remove the seed leaves (cotyledons) and plant up to the first set of true leaves. Water in. If seed is planted in outside seed beds transplant when seedlings are 6-8cm tall.
